Update On Johnny Gargano’s WWE Push

Update On Johnny Gargano WWE push after SmackDown match with CM Punk

After months of a storyline that made him look lost and unmotivated, Gargano is starting to get real momentum back. His September 4 SmackDown main event against CM Punk looked like the spark fans have been waiting for.

On the September 8 Fightful Select Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp was asked a simple question: is Johnny Gargano finally getting pushed, or at least getting more consistent TV time?

His answer was clear. WWE plans to feature Gargano more going forward. “The plan is for him to be featured more,” Sapp told Fightful Select.

Sapp also shared some backstory. He said he was told back in January, when Gargano’s angle began, that there was no real end point planned for it. It was an open-ended story with no clear direction.

He also pointed out how strange the storyline was in the first place. The idea was that Gargano’s best friend left for AEW, and Gargano was upset because he couldn’t go with him. That thin plot kept him off TV for close to eight months, despite being one of the most skilled workers on the roster.

Sapp did give WWE credit for one thing. Bringing Gargano back with a big first-time match against CM Punk in Cleveland was a smart way to reintroduce him.

Fans have wanted a real push for Johnny Gargano since his main roster debut. He’s proven himself as a strong in-ring performer for years, but WWE has struggled to give him a storyline that matches his talent.

If this report holds true, it means WWE sees value in featuring him more consistently rather than keeping him stuck in the background. A strengthened role coming out of a match against a star like CM Punk would be a good sign that creative finally has a plan for him.

For now, fans will be watching each week to see if Gargano’s TV time actually increases, or if this turns into another false start.
