Wrestling isn’t just about moves or championships—it has always been built on trust. And in wrestling, trust exists for one reason: to be broken. It’s one of the oldest storytelling tricks in the business, yet it never stops working. A tag team partner walks out in the middle of a match. A best friend suddenly swings a steel chair when nobody expects it. A student turns against the mentor who helped shape their career. Moments like these often leave a bigger impact than championship victories because they tap into something every fan understands—loyalty, friendship, and betrayal.
That’s why betrayal storylines continue to be some of wrestling’s most unforgettable moments. Fans don’t just invest in matches or finishing moves; they become emotionally attached to the relationships between wrestlers. So when those bonds are shattered on live television, the reaction feels instant and real. Here are the betrayals that fans still talk about years—and sometimes even decades—later.
#1.Seth Rollins Turns on The Shield
The Shield is still considered one of WWE’s greatest and most popular factions of all time. The group was built on the idea of “brothers against the world.” Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins dominated the roster together for more than a year. Fans truly believed in their friendship and strong bond.
Then, on a 2014 episode of Raw, Batista quit WWE, leaving Triple H and Randy Orton without a third member. Later that night, Roman Reigns faced Randy Orton in the main event. Before the match, Triple H simply said, “There’s always a Plan B.”
Seconds later, Seth Rollins smashed a steel chair into Roman Reigns’ back. Dean Ambrose had no idea what was happening. Rollins kept hitting both Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose with the chair before finally destroying The Shield. The image of Seth Rollins standing over his two former brothers with a steel chair in his hand became one of the most iconic moments of that era.
What made this betrayal so unforgettable wasn’t just the shock—it was the timing. WWE made The Shield look unstoppable until the very last moment, so almost nobody in the crowd saw Rollins’ betrayal coming.
#2. Shawn Michaels Superkicks Marty Jannetty
Before becoming “Mr. WrestleMania,” Shawn Michaels was one half of The Rockers alongside Marty Jannetty. In January 1992, the two appeared on The Barbershop, where fans expected them to talk about the future of their tag team. Instead, something completely unexpected happened. Shawn Michaels suddenly grabbed Marty Jannetty, hit him with Sweet Chin Music, and threw him through the segment’s glass window. The moment shocked fans, and even today it’s still one of the most memorable betrayals in wrestling. I also had a great time watching that taped segment because nobody saw it coming.
Even today, many fans see this as the moment that truly started Shawn Michaels’ singles career, and it’s easy to understand why. The betrayal had nothing to do with a championship or a long storyline. It happened out of nowhere during a simple talk segment, when everyone expected things to stay normal. That surprise made the moment unforgettable, and many WWE heel turns in the years that followed used the same formula.
#3. Andre the Giant Turns on Hulk Hogan
Whenever wrestling fans think of Andre the Giant, they almost always remember Hulk Hogan. And when Hulk Hogan’s name comes up, it’s impossible not to think about Andre the Giant. Before they became rivals, the two were close friends. That’s exactly why their split felt so emotional. Andre had been growing frustrated for a long time. He believed Hogan had held the WWE Championship for too long while he never got a fair title opportunity. Then, on an episode of Piper’s Pit, Andre appeared alongside Bobby Heenan, Hogan’s biggest enemy at the time. Right there, he challenged Hogan for the WWE Championship.
Andre then ripped the crucifix chain from Hogan’s neck, tore his shirt apart, and threw it to the mat. Hogan looked completely stunned and couldn’t even look Andre in the eyes. The fans inside the arena were just as shocked. It felt like everyone was sitting there with their mouths open, trying to process what they had just witnessed. This betrayal became unforgettable not because of a cheap shot or a surprise attack, but because it was the result of years of frustration finally boiling over. The storyline went on to set up the legendary WrestleMania III match, which many fans still consider one of the greatest matches in WWE history.
#4. Kevin Owens Attacks Chris Jericho at the Festival of Friendship
Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens were one of WWE’s best on-screen friendships. For months, WWE built their friendship through an on-screen storyline, and fans absolutely loved it. Their chemistry felt natural, partly because both men came from Canada. Their matching jackets, entertaining segments, and funny inside jokes made the friendship even more memorable. In 2017, Chris Jericho organized the “Festival of Friendship” to celebrate everything they had built together. But Kevin Owens had a very different gift for his friend. He pulled out a list, and it had only one name on it—Chris Jericho’s.
A few moments later, Kevin Owens brutally attacked Chris Jericho and left the entire arena in shock. Nobody could believe that Owens had turned on his best friend. WWE fans never saw it coming. The betrayal worked so well because WWE spent months making fans believe their friendship was real. When a friendship feels genuine, its breakup hits even harder. That’s why many fans still consider this one of WWE’s greatest slow-burn betrayal storylines. And yes, this has always been one of my favorite storylines too, especially because Chris Jericho later went on to join All Elite Wrestling.
#5. Bret Hart and the Montreal Screwjob
The Montreal Screwjob is widely considered the biggest betrayal in wrestling history. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a current WWE fan or an old-school wrestling fan—chances are you’ve heard about it at least once. This wasn’t part of a scripted storyline. It was real. At the 1997 Survivor Series, Vince McMahon wanted Bret Hart to lose the WWE Championship to Shawn Michaels before leaving the company for WCW. But Bret Hart refused to drop the title to Shawn Michaels in his home country, Canada. The two also had real backstage issues at the time. Vince McMahon then made a decision without telling Bret Hart, and that decision changed wrestling history forever.
During the match, Bret Hart had Shawn Michaels locked in the Sharpshooter when referee Earl Hebner suddenly called for the bell, even though Bret Hart had never submitted. In an instant, the match was over, Shawn Michaels became the new WWE Champion, and Bret Hart realized what had happened right there in front of the live crowd and millions of fans watching at home. The entire arena was in shock. It was an unbelievable scene. The incident later became known as the Montreal Screwjob.
The Montreal Screwjob blurred the line between scripted wrestling and real-life business more than anything else in WWE history. Even after nearly 30 years, fans still debate what really happened that night. To be honest, when I first heard about it, I couldn’t believe something like this had actually happened in professional wrestling.
#6. Evolution Turns On Randy Orton
Evolution is widely considered one of the most dominant factions in WWE history. Ric Flair represented experience, Triple H was the biggest star of the group, while Batista and Randy Orton were seen as the future of the company. But everything changed when Randy Orton won the World Heavyweight Championship before Triple H.
That victory filled Triple H with jealousy. During Randy Orton’s championship celebration, Evolution’s leader decided it was time to betray him. Triple H gave the signal, and Batista attacked Randy Orton. In that moment, Orton’s time with Evolution came to an end. The betrayal shocked fans because Evolution was at the top of WWE at the time. I was also a huge Evolution fan before The Shield came along.
At first, the betrayal looked like a major setback for Randy Orton’s career. But in the long run, it gave him the chance to create his own identity. Over time, Orton became one of WWE’s most dangerous, cold, and calculating superstars, and later grew into one of the most successful champions in company history. Sometimes, what looks like the end of a career turns out to be the moment that changes everything.
#7. Sami Zayn Turns on The Bloodline
Sami Zayn’s role in The Bloodline was loved by almost every WWE fan. For more than a year, he played the “Honorary Uce” and did everything he could to earn the trust of Roman Reigns and the entire Bloodline. Over time, fans also started seeing Sami as a real member of the family. Still, deep down, everyone knew the story probably wouldn’t have a happy ending. That moment finally arrived when Sami Zayn had to make the biggest decision of his career. He chose to stand against Roman Reigns and protect his longtime friend Kevin Owens, fully knowing that nothing would ever be the same for him inside The Bloodline.
This betrayal was different from almost every other wrestling storyline. Sami Zayn wasn’t the one who got betrayed. Instead, he chose loyalty over power and friendship over status. That’s what made the story so emotional and helped it connect with millions of fans. It was one of those rare betrayals where turning on someone was actually the right thing to do. And yes, this was my favorite part of the entire Bloodline story. When Sami finally turned on Roman Reigns, the crowd exploded with excitement—and I was celebrating right along with them.
#8. Paul Heyman Turns on Both CM Punk and Roman Reigns
At WrestleMania 41, Paul Heyman found himself caught between two men who had been a big part of his career—CM Punk and Roman Reigns. Heyman handed CM Punk a steel chair and told him to use it on Roman Reigns. Just as Punk was about to swing, Heyman suddenly hit him with a low blow and took him out. It was a shocking moment, but most fans still believed that the Wise Man would stay loyal to his Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns.
Then, only moments later, Heyman turned around and did the exact same thing to Roman. At that point, the entire crowd was stunned. Nobody had any idea that something like this was about to happen. After Heyman’s double betrayal, the path was clear for Seth Rollins to walk away with the victory.
Paul Heyman betraying both CM Punk and Roman Reigns in the same match showed why he has remained one of wrestling’s most fascinating characters for so many years. Nobody ever knows whose side Paul Heyman is really on, and that’s what makes every appearance feel unpredictable. This was one of the biggest shocks in recent WWE history.
